It sure is obvious that thyroid problems are a big, big problem and a hot, hot topic.

The July 26, 2010, cowl of First for Women magazine shrieks TIRED? Americas easiest-loved doctor has answers. Dr. Ozs THYROID CURE And theres a big picture of the good doctor.

So lets see what good old Dr. Oz has to say about curing the thyroid. Or at least what the writer says he says. Which might be very different.

While Im not anywhere near as famous as Dr. Oz, Ive been through the interview scenario plenty of times. And nobody ever got things permanently right. Even simple, basic facts came out wrong. My remarks, then, concern whats in the article.

First, Dr. Oz says doctors can miss thyroid problems, mistaking them for normal signs of aging. Theres nothing normal about thyroid problems; not being able to spot them puts you in line for a seeing eye dog. Do you suppose it was normal signs of aging that caused doctors to miss the problem in my pre-teen years? My teen years? My twenties?

Then comes one different baloney sandwich: While typical thyroid tests uncover most cases. Doctors actually believe that! No wonder were dying out here.

Then comes the stunner: symptoms can sometimes trump test results. Sorry, Doc, but symptoms ALWAYS trump test results. Thyroid tests are unreliable from the get-go.

Well, Im hardly into the article, and my blood pressure is already pedal to the metal.

At which point Dr. Oz says stress causes thyroid problems! Right there on page 36 he says that! Stress is a symptom, not a cause. When doctors start blaming stress, its time to head for the door.

Then the article describes two thyroid-slowing toxins, giving them the brunt of the blame: triclosan and perchlorate.

I wrote about the dangers of triclosan in my Too Pooped To Participate e-zine. Its the stuff they put in soaps to disinfect everything, and its bad. Its also in computer plastic, toys, etc. The thing to do, as Dr. Oz says, is read labels and steer clear of it as easiest you'll.

Perchlorate is rocket fuel that sloppy practices allowed to enter and pollute groundwater. And theres not a whole lot we can do about it individually.

The article remains silent on some simple thing we can do for ourselves. Like ditching soy, which depresses thyroid operate like nobodys industrial. Its in processed food, fast food, chain restaurant foodpretty much as far as the eye can see, theres soy. And its poison.

And man-made fluoride, a toxic by-product of phosphate production, that they put in our water supply and toothpaste. It doesnt do anybody a bit of good, happy claims about no cavities aside. But its murder on the thyroid.

And bromine, a hearth retardant they put in our bread and use to condition pool water. It makes our thyroid hormone non-functional, however the vaunted blood tests cant tell theres an issue.

And how about high fructose corn syrup? It does a number on the whole endocrine system, not just the thyroid.

Well, I could go on about the dangers around us, but back to the Dr. Oz and the article.

Dr. Oz bargains a three-step plan for thyroid health. He says, Hypothyroidism is straightforward to treat with dietary tweaks and natural remedies. Would that it were so!

Hypothyroidism is a mess, and the reality is, doctors dont really know the way to treat it. Theyre taught to give unreliable blood tests, then prescribe medicines that dont work. Thats the extent of their knowledgeunless and until something motivates them to search beyond what med schools teach. But lets look at Dr. Ozs happy little three-step solution.

First, take Vitamin D. Great advice. Vitamin D3 is actually a hormone that makes the entire endocrine system smile. But 5000 IU a day is a more reasonable adult dose than the little dab recommended. And dont get it at the drugstore as the article says; get a good brand consisting of Country Life at the health food store or on-line.

Second, steam the vegetables that are recognized to depress thyroid operate when you eat them raw. Broccoli, brussel sprouts, lima beans, etc. Better to take a pass; nobodys proved that cooking actually removes the problem.

Third, reconsider iodine. YES! A THOUSAND TIMES, YES! But ignore remainder of that section.

Dr. Oz talks about table salt. That stuff receives processed to death, bleached, then loaded with bad-for-you additives. Its very bad, no good stuff, especially when iodized. Use sea salt. Its better for you, and your taste buds will love you.

Then consider Iodoral, an iodine/iodide mix that blesses the thyroid, whether over or underactive. Doctors used iodine to cure all demeanour of illnesses for good more than 100 years, but in the nineteen sixties, medicos turned against iodine and started agitating against its use. So now were all deficient.

The article ends with a variety of remarks about high cholesterol and finding a doctor who takes you seriously.

I have high hopes for Dr. Oz. Watching his tv convey persuades me that he truly wants to assist patients, and hes slowly moving into, for him, the uncharted waters of natural healing and not believing everything Big Pharma says. I dont think he realizes how deep into Big-Pharma-think he is, but he seems open to new recommendations.

He sure could change the face of medicine.
